Caring Brings Success

Secondary Department

The Secondary Department

Literacy permeates every area and experience for our students in the Senior Department. Teachers personalize their approaches in order to improve progression in Literacy for every learner. For some students, that means learning to read and write but for others, success in the Talking and Listening component of the curriculum is their ultimate target.

For the young people who do not acquire the skills to engage independently with print (‘reading and writing’), we look instead for activities and approaches that recognize literacy in alternative forms and the functional aspects of literacy assume significance, for example, the ability to go to a shop and, unaided, select tins and packets by ‘reading’ the initial letter on the package affords a degree of independence which literacy offers.

We encourage and develop the literacy skills of our young people to prepare them for life now and beyond school, to be lifelong learners and valuable contributors to society.

Caterpillars to Butterflies

Class 1s, 3s and 6s have been looking after 5 caterpillars during their life cycle. We released our beautiful butterflies after they changed. We were all very excited to see them flying off into the sky!
